What school did you attend and what made you decide to go there?
I choose Brooklyn College because it was close to home, it was a athletic program and the team was young (5 freshmen came in with me).

Memorable Sports Moment: When I scored my 1000th point. First female in the school’s history

Hobbies:
Jogging, working out, reading and traveling

The Bible

Why you’re involved in UWG: I feel like it my responsibility to support young people, share my experiences and help open doors for generations to follow.

Who’s been the most influential person in your life? My parents, coaches and friends.

What’s your favorite movie? Auntie Mame – Lucille Ball

What’s the hardest life lesson you have had to learn? You can’t be successful at anything if you give up when you hit some road blocks.

Where do you see yourself in 5 yrs?
Going full-time with my own business

Karie Mercedes Henderson

What school did you attend and what made you decide to go there?
Miami University (Ohio)/I wanted to play Division I and get a great education at a school that wasn’t too big or too small.

Memorable Sports Moment: Making it to my High School State Championship.

Hobbies:
Boxing, Traveling, Reading.

Sacred Hoop.

Why you’re involved in UWG: To give back and to help guide student athlete’s make good decisions off-court.

Who’s been the most influential person in your life? My parents.

What’s your favorite movie? Coming to America

What’s the hardest life lesson you have had to learn? Don’t take a job for the people or the money, the people will always change and the money will come.

Where do you see yourself in 5 yrs?
Strategic Account Director and owner of a Boxing Gym.

Jaime Sparling
Michigan State University, Swimming

What school did you attend and what made you decide to go there?
Michigan State University – both my parents attended MSU along with my Grandfather and 4 of my aunts and uncles. My family has had season tickets to football games my entire life and spent many Saturdays at MSU together. I fell in love with the campus, the people and the athletics. My best memories from childhood took place at MSU!

Memorable Sports Moment: I was a sophomore in high school and at the League meet when I got my first individual state cut in the 100 freestyle. It felt amazing to swim as fast as I did and that all the hard work from the season had paid off!

Hobbies:
Swimming, playing & watching sports, movies, concerts, hanging out with friends and family.

Favorite Book:
The Giver & Tuesdays with Morrie.

Why you’re involved in UWG: My experience as a student-athlete gave me discipline and certainty that I could achieve anything I wanted to achieve with hard work and dedication. It challenged me and showed me the meaning of success. I want to help others achieve that same experience.

Who’s been the most influential person in your life? My parents! They have always supported me in all of my endeavors. They are both extremely hard working and successful and have been there for me in every possible way.

What’s your favorite movie? The Usual Suspects

What’s the hardest life lesson you have had to learn? Not all things will work out the way you planned.

Where do you see yourself in 5 yrs?
Still working in sports, successful and happy.

Alyssa Raas
Boston College, Rugby

What school did you attend and what made you decide to go there?
Boston College – It had the perfect blend of academics and athletics, is in a great city, and has wonderful people.

Memorable Sports Moment: Any roadtrip with my team – Philadelphia 2007, torrential downpours, muddiest field ever, best memories.

Hobbies:
Working out, going to sporting events, taking advantage of the warm weather whenever I get the chance.

Favorite Book:
Winning By Jack Welch.

Why you’re involved in UWG: To help student-athletes with the various challenges of everyday life and to serve as a positive role model

Who’s been the most influential person in your life? My parents. One word: Sacrifice.

What’s your favorite movie? Love & Basketball.

What’s the hardest life lesson you have had to learn? Sometimes “perfection” is unattainable, no matter how hard you try.

Where do you see yourself in 5 yrs?
Still working in sports and loving life.

Antoinette Koram
University of Pittsburgh-Go Pitt! / Women’s soccer

What school did you attend and what made you decide to go there? I decided to go to Pitt because its a small city with great academics and competitive division 1 athletics.

Mentee: Sonata

Memorable Sports Moment: Getting my number framed- it represents all the sweat, blood and tears that went into being a collegiate athlete.

Hobbies:
violin, cooking, marathon running, traveling

The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch, “Live life to the fullest!”

Why you’re involved in UWG: UWG is an incredible organization that gives me the opportunity mentor up and coming athletes. Its exciting to pass on my knowledge of college sports to help someone else pursue their dreams.

Who’s been the most influential person in your life? My mom 🙂

What’s your favorite movie? Rocky

What’s the hardest life lesson you have had to learn? Things don’t always go as planned

Where do you see yourself in 5 yrs? I see myself living life to the fullest, enjoying my family and friends and traveling around the world.

What school did you attend and what made you decide to go there?
Attended Florida A&M University to enroll in its 5-year MBA program which offered me opportunities beyond my belief.

Memorable Sports Moment: NA

Hobbies: Watching TV, traveling and running (whenever its warm).

Favorite Book: “Soul on Ice” by Eldridge Cleaver.

Why you’re involved in UWG: Although I never had a mentor while growing up, there was always someone outside of my immediate family members that left a lasting impression on my life and in some way made me into the person I am today, whether big or small. By joining UWG, it has allowed me to be that person for kids of the next generation.

Who’s been the most influential person in your life? My mother, Gwendolyn Hayes

What’s your favorite movie? Love & “Do the Right Thing”

What’s the hardest life lesson you have had to learn? Tomorrow’s never promised, so take a second out of your day to tell your loved ones how much you appreciate them.

Where do you see yourself in 5 yrs? Continued on the track to towards a senior level position within a sports organization.
